Rita Heikenfeld's Mushroom Barley Soup Recipe

Some people like a drizzle of red wine vinegar to finish off the soup. I made this with the 3 cans of broth and 1 can of water. Next time I’ll use all broth.

4-5 strips bacon, cut up
2 cups chopped onion
1 tablespoon garlic
1 pound Cremini or other mushrooms, sliced
1 scant tablespoon tomato paste
4 cans beef broth (or 3 cans broth and 1 can water)
1 cup quick cooking barley
1 teaspoon dried marjoram or oregano

Sauté bacon until crisp. Add onion and garlic .Cook until onion is starting to brown. Add mushrooms and cook until tender and pot is beginning to get dry. Stir in rest of ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer and cook until barley is tender, about 20 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.

Rita Heikenfeld's Ezekiel Bread

Ezekiel bread typically contains barley, spelt, wheat, beans, lentils and millet. It’s a yeasted bread which takes some time to make. The ingredients are ground into a flour or sometimes allowed to sprout before using in the bread. My recipe contains wheat, millet, barley, and wheat germ. It’s a quick bread and really delicious. The millet gives it a wonderful crunch and has iron.

Preheat oven to 375.

3 cups self rising flour
2 tablespoons each: quick cooking barley, wheat germ and millet ***
2 tablespoons honey
1 can, 12 oz, beer (I used light beer)
2 tablespoons butter or substitute, melted

Mix flour and grains together. Add honey and then stir in beer. Don’t overmix. You’ll get a thick, lumpy batter. Pour into sprayed loaf pan. Pour melted butter over. Bake 45-55 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

***Tips from Rita’s kitchen:

If you don’t have all of the bible grains called for, don’t worry. You can make a regular kind of bread with any of the three, or even none at all. (But don’t call it Ezekiel bread!).

Canada: Come and Get Me

Canada's Human Rights Tribunals, wacky enough before now, have finally gone off the deep end.

In December, a Human Rights Tribunal declared that a Catholic school association was guilty of religious discrimination for firing three consultants after it learned they were "clergy" of a UFO cult.

The three consultants, all siblings, were for some reason hired to teach "emotional pedagogy training" (note to Canadian school associations: don't hire anyone from an organization called the Academy of Pleasurology and Emotional Intelligence to do anything for you). It turns out that they are a "bishop" and "priests" of the Raelians -- the people who worship UFOs

After discovering this, in another example of religious persecution, the school association also told other school boards that the APEI was run by Raelians.

The Tribunal's ruling: "On the basis of the documents submitted by the plaintiffs, the Tribunal concludes that according to article 3 of the Code there was discrimination based on religious beliefs. The defendant did terminate working contracts because of the plaintiffs' religious beliefs."

That's right -- in Canada it is apparently against the law to fire people to teach your teachers after you discover that their "pedagogy" is based on the idea that life was begun by aliens who have contacted their great leader Rael (a former sports journalist, now France's own L. R. Hubbard) and that cloning will create a perfect and immortal society -- one might say a "master race."

You can read the ruling here, if you read French.

Well, Canada, I would fire them too -- whether I worked for a Catholic or a secular school system. Moreover, if I ran a genetics lab, I would fire any employees I discovered were Raelians. Who knows what cloning work they would be doing on the side or when they were supposed to be on break? That's not religious persecution, that's common sense.

Come and get me.
